Philip, South Dakota... Where the Sun Kisses the Earth 

There are many places that you could visit. Whether you planned to be here, or happened by chance, we’re glad you’re here! If you are plannng a visit with us in beautiful Western South Dakota and want more information, let us help. The wide open spaces this great land has to offer, along with a scenic view and quiet country living, are some of the things you will remember forever. Temperatures can range from very hot or very cold in our area, but enjoying the variety of seasons is why many decide to make this their home.

Minutes of the April Chamber Meeting PDF Print E-mail
The Chamber met on April 13th, at 7:00pm at the Steakhouse. Sixteen members were in attendance. The Officers present were:  Milo Zeeb, Kent Olsonn and Codi Vallery.

The Secretary's and Treasurer's reports were given and approved.

Guest Mark Herbergere of the Minute Man Missile Site gave an update on the site, tourism plans and management plans.

Kent Olson mentioned that the Silverleaf as the State's Assisted Living Facility. He also spoke to th changesbeing seen at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He said the Philip Hospital and he stand separate from R.C. Regional and will not be affected.

Glen Parsons, who has taken the chair position for the Festival Days committee, gave an update on upcoming activities. Currently he, along with Kerri Hostutler, Trisha Larson and Jay Baxter, are heading up activities. The City of Philip has approved the open container permit for the street dance. Security has been hired for the Dustin Evans concert.

He also gave a run-down of events to be held. On Saturday there will be:  a 5K Run/Walk, a Parade, possible Ping-Pong fly-over, Vivian Hansen burger bust, Water Fights with the Fire Department, Kids' Games, Square Dancing and a possible Karoke Contest.

The Spud Gittings Golf Tournament will be held on Sunday.

Milo Zeeb made mention of "Paint SD" information and the application the Chamber had received. It was made available to an organization or person  that might be interested in the project.

Codi Vallery reported that the Philip Chamber of Commerce, along witthe Kadoka Community Betterment Association, had been chose as this year's Haakon/Jackon County Fair honorees. The two organizations will be featured in the Fair issue that will be printed later this summer.

LeAnna Fitzgerald of the Missouri Shores Center gave those in attendance a glimpse of what the Center, located in Pierre, provides to those who are in abusive relationships. Missouri Shores provides a safe place to stay for five counties and offers an advocate in the court system.

Marsha West, who is helping plan the 50th Reunion for 2010 (those classes that had graduated from 1950 to 1959) asked the Chamber if she could expect Festival Days to be on the same weekend next year - the 3rd weekend in June. Ray Smith motioned that it should be. It was seconded and approved.

Librarian Annine Brunskill spoke for a few moments about the library and its resources that are available for members of the community. The library is open Monday thru Friday from 11:30am to 5:30pm.

Glen Parson spoke on behalf of Jeff Reickmann who had made mention that for the next year's sports program, ads might be offered. The ads would be worded in support of Philip High School activities.

Milo Zeeb adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will take place on May 11 at the the 73 Bar.

Newsflash

Philip's Third Annual Invitational Matched Bronc Ride is scheduled for Friday, June 19, 2009.  It will start at 6:00 pm at the Philip Roping Arena.  Advance tickets are $8.00.  At the gate, tickets are $10.00.  Children 10 and under are free.  Stock contractors are Korkow and Burch Rodeo Company.  Free burgers will be served.
