Philip, South Dakota... Where the Sun Kisses the Earth

There are many places that you could visit. Whether you planned to be here, or happened by chance, we’re glad you’re here! If you are plannng a visit with us in beautiful Western South Dakota and want more information, let us help. The wide open spaces this great land has to offer, along with a scenic view and quiet country living, are some of the things you will remember forever. Temperatures can range from very hot or very cold in our area, but enjoying the variety of seasons is why many decide to make this their home.

22 Members were present

Old business was postponed so that Mary Burnett and Diane Fitch could present an announcement that the Horizons project was planning on having a graduation of sorts. They will be conducting the Chamber meeting at the Fire Hall Park on July 14, 2008. There will be recognition of the many volunteers that had given of their time for Horizons. Also they will announce .the progress that has been made as a result of their program. This will include the regular Chamber Meeting along with an Ice Cream Social. There will be recognition made through arts/culture, education, community betterment, human services & economic development. All organizations are to bring promotion posters. Everyone is to bring lawn chairs.

Mary & Diane were questioned if they had received any ‘Brand' suggestions for Philip. They related that they had not held a follow up meeting yet.

OLD BUSINESS:

The Matched Bronc: is pretty much all in place, Volunteer Less Pearson has the grills, food etc. all lined up. Corky Thorson will attend to getting other supplies as needed. Brandon West has taken care of the two tents. There will be chutes in place. Sales are going good. The HCYW led by Shandon Fugate will be doing the beer, pop, water etc. The profits will be designated on a 30%, 30%, 40%. It was felt that the ease, with which this is making it for the Chamber, is worth it. Joe Gittings has delegated the parking, ticket takers etc. It was a popular consensus that that all is going well.

The Festival Committee is taking care of the Festival day's agenda. Ray Gibson, Doug West & Terri Pelle. Corky announced that the games would be in place at the Banks parking lot. There is going to be a dance with a DJ. Terri Pelle arranged the contract for this. If the Steakhouse and 73 Bar want another dance they will do this on their own. There will be a demolition derby with a concession stand on August 2nd. Kelly will contact Nancy Haigh to find out if the Fair Board will need volunteers from the Chamber to help with some of their events. .

NEW BUSINESS

Christine Andrus our guest speaker took the floor. She announced that she had contacted the Chamber Office in regards to implementing a Farmers Market in Philip. She informed them that she had contacted the City Council of Philip, to ask them to waive the peddlers license fee for this event. The Council voted to waive the fee, ad this will be a progressive move for Philip. It was a unanimous feeling that this would be very beneficial for the community. It would help keep people in town shopping, rather than going out of town.

She does not want to ‘run' the event. She only wants to be the resource person, seeking to get information on how to conduct a Farmers Market. Christine has promised to committee to helping for the first year. doing researching etc.

Christine has scheduled June 21, 2008 for the organization meeting. This will be held at the Senior Center @ 2:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend. It was agreed to put an Ad in the paper, get it on the Web site, put up flyers etc.

There was a lively participation from the audience, with much excitement, questions, & suggestions. Joe Gittings (First National Agency) offered to help with the advertising. Don Ravellette set up an appointment for Christine to meet with Bo and present a document for flyers or posters.

With no further business the meeting was adjourned
