Two Philip Men Making Their Mark in the PRCA |
In the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association), South Dakota is well-known for its championship-winning saddle bronc riders - Earl Thode, Casey Tibbs, Clint Johnson, Robert Etbauer, Billy Etbauer, Tom Reeves, Jeff Willert and Chad Ferley, to name a few. These cowboys and many other South Dakotans have honed their skills on the big, strong bucking horses that only the Northern Plains can produce.
Some of those riders have ties to Philip, whether they live or have lived nearby or have family living in Philip. But there is a tie to Philip that many Badland Circuit riders and numerous top-ranking PRCA cowboys have that few people know about - their bronc saddles.
Two Philip men, Branden West and Irvin Jones, have made over thirty-five (35) bronc saddles that well-known riders like J.J. Elshere, Bryce Miller (current leader in the standings), Cody Wright (2008 NFR Champion), Cody Taton, Kaleb Asay, Cole Elshere, Ryan Elshere, Ty Kennedy and Zack West compete on. Last year, three National Finals Rodeo qualifiers used their saddles. In 2009, six of the top sixteen riders in the nation "cowboy up" on the handiwork. The reasons some of best riders in the nation are competing on their product: its construction, strength and comfort.
